NRNA two factions agree to unite, Minister Kharel insists on sustainability of unification

Kathmandu, Nov 30: An agreement was signed today to unify the two factions within the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA).

A document formalizing the comprehensive unification between the group led by Dr Badri KC, who was elected Executive Committee Chair through the NRNA 11th General Convention, and the group led by Mahesh Shrestha, elected Chair by the Unity General Convention, was signed today in the presence of Prime Minister Sushila Karki and the Minister for Communications and Information Technology at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.

It is reported that Minister Kharel took a special initiative to bring the two groups together.

On the occasion, the Minister emphasized the need to uphold the agreement, saying that unity not division is essential for progress. He said the development sends a positive message to around eight million NRNs across the globe.

Describing the unification as a great opportunity for the NRNA to elevate its image, he applauded its role during major crises in Nepal, such as the 2015 earthquake, the economic blockade, and the COVID-19 pandemic. He urged the NRNA leadership to rise above partisan interests and contribute to Nepal’s economic growth.

Praising the NRNA’s investments despite risks, he pledged to help ensure that their concerns are addressed at the government level.

Dr KC committed to further contributing to Nepal’s economic development efforts and called for a legal provision to prevent future divisions within the Association on political grounds.

Shrestha said the unification has inspired all members to further engage in nation-building efforts. According to him, the agreement has cleared long-standing misunderstandings within the NRNA.

A 10-point agreement has been signed, including a commitment to hold the 12th General Convention within the next four months. It was shared that a committee will be formed to look after NRNA affairs until the 12th General Convention is held.
